Yes, strawberries can fit on keto in small portions. Per 100 g (about 7 medium strawberries), they have 7.7 g of total carbohydrate and 2.0 g of fiber, so about 5.7 g of net carbs, according to USDA FoodData Central. A half-cup portion of about 75 g has roughly 4 g of net carbs, which fits most keto plans. Raspberries and blackberries are lower in net carbs because they have more fiber, while blueberries are about twice as high.

Carbs in strawberries and other berries
Here’s how common berries compare per 100 g, raw, using values from USDA FoodData Central:
| Berry (100 g) | Total carbs | Fiber | Net carbs | Calories | Vitamin C |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blackberries | 9.6 g | 5.3 g | 4.3 g | 43 | 21 mg |
| Raspberries | 11.9 g | 6.5 g | 5.4 g | 52 | 26 mg |
| Strawberries | 7.7 g | 2.0 g | 5.7 g | 32 | 59 mg |
| Cranberries | 12.0 g | 3.6 g | 8.4 g | 46 | 14 mg |
| Blueberries | 14.5 g | 2.4 g | 12.1 g | 57 | 10 mg |
Strawberries have the fewest calories and the most vitamin C of the berries in the table. Blackberries and raspberries have the lowest net carbs because so much of their carbohydrate is fiber. Our guide to calculating net carbs explains the method.
How many strawberries can you eat on keto?
It depends on your daily limit. Here’s the net carb count for common portions, based on 5.7 g per 100 g:
| Portion | Approximate weight | Net carbs |
|---|---|---|
| 3 medium strawberries | 36 g | 2.0 g |
| Half a cup, sliced | 75 g | 4.3 g |
| 1 cup, sliced | 165 g | 9.4 g |
| A full punnet | 400 g | 22.7 g |
On a strict 20 g day, half a cup leaves plenty of room for vegetables. A whole punnet would use up the entire day’s allowance. Most people on keto treat berries as a small dessert or snack rather than a main food. The keto food list shows how berries compare with other foods.
Why berries are worth including
Keto cuts out most fruit, which can leave your diet short of vitamin C and fiber. A small portion of berries helps fill that gap. A half-cup of strawberries provides about 44 mg of vitamin C, based on USDA values. That’s around half of the 75 mg a day that the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements recommends for adult women (90 mg for men).
In the Keto-Med trial, people ate less fiber and less vitamin C on a ketogenic diet than on a Mediterranean-style diet, which kept fruit. Making room for berries is one easy way to soften that trade-off.
Keto-friendly ways to eat strawberries
- With cream: 75 g of sliced strawberries with 2 tablespoons of heavy cream has about 5 g of net carbs.
- With Greek yogurt: stir sliced strawberries into plain Greek yogurt with a few chopped nuts.
- In a salad: add a few sliced strawberries to a spinach or arugula salad with goat cheese and walnuts.
- Frozen: freeze sliced strawberries for a cold snack, or blend them with ice and a little cream.
- With dark chocolate: dip a few strawberries in melted dark chocolate with a high cocoa content. Check the label, because chocolate still contains sugar.
Watch out for these
- Dried strawberries are far more concentrated in sugar per gram, and many have added sugar.
- Strawberry jam and sauces are mostly sugar, unless they’re labelled sugar-free.
- Strawberry yogurts and smoothies usually contain added sugar.
- Portion creep. Strawberries are easy to keep eating, so weigh a portion the first few times.
Fresh vs frozen strawberries
Plain frozen strawberries have the same carbohydrate as fresh ones, as long as there’s no added sugar. Check the label, and choose packs that list only strawberries. Frozen berries are cheaper out of season and handy for smoothies and desserts.
How to choose and store strawberries
Look for berries that are red right up to the stem, firm and glossy. Strawberries don’t keep ripening much once picked. Store them unwashed in the fridge and wash them just before eating, because moisture makes them spoil faster.
Common questions
Do strawberries kick you out of ketosis?
A small portion is unlikely to, because it adds only a few grams of carbohydrate. A large bowl might, especially on a strict 20 g plan. What matters is your total carbohydrate for the day, not any single food.
Are strawberries better than blueberries on keto?
Yes, for carbs. Strawberries have about half the net carbs of blueberries per 100 g. Blackberries and raspberries are lower still.
Before you start
Safety note: Keto isn’t suitable for everyone. If you have diabetes, kidney or liver disease, take regular medication, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before cutting carbs this far (why it matters).
Strawberries vs other keto-friendly fruit
Berries are the main fruit on most keto plans, but a few other fruits fit in small amounts. Per 100 g, avocado has about 1.8 g of net carbs, and lemon or lime juice adds only small amounts when used for flavor. Most other fruits, such as apples, bananas, grapes and mangoes, are much higher. A banana, for example, has about 20.2 g of net carbs per 100 g, according to USDA FoodData Central.
A simple keto strawberry dessert
Slice 75 g of strawberries into a glass. Whip 60 ml (ΒΌ cup) of heavy cream to soft peaks with a few drops of vanilla. Spoon the cream over the berries and top with a few chopped pecans. That’s about 6 to 7 g of net carbs in total, mostly from the strawberries, and makes one generous serving or two small ones.
Strawberries and blood sugar
Whole strawberries contain natural sugar along with fiber and water, and whole fruit doesn’t count toward the free sugar limits set by the World Health Organization. If you have diabetes, check how a portion of berries affects your own readings, and talk to your diabetes team about how fruit fits your plan.
