Keto Coffee Shop Orders

The easiest keto coffee shop orders are black coffee, espresso, an Americano, plain tea, or coffee with a splash of cream. Most of the carbs in café drinks come from milk and sweet syrups. Regular milk has about 4.8 g of carbs per 100 ml, according to USDA FoodData Central, so a large latte made with 300 ml of milk contains roughly 14 to 15 g, while flavored lattes, mochas, frappés and chai lattes can contain far more because of syrups, sauces and sweetened bases. Ask for heavy cream, a small amount of milk, or unsweetened almond milk instead, and use a sugar-free syrup or skip the sweetener entirely. Below are the best orders, the drinks to avoid, and how to customize.

Drinks to skip or adapt

  • Flavored lattes, such as vanilla, caramel or hazelnut, made with classic syrups.
  • Mochas and hot chocolates, which use sweetened chocolate sauce.
  • Frappés and blended coffee drinks, often made from a sugary base.
  • Chai lattes, usually made from a sweetened concentrate.
  • Matcha lattes, which are often made with a pre-sweetened matcha powder. Our guide to whether matcha is good for you explains how to order it unsweetened.
  • Pumpkin spice and seasonal drinks, high in syrup and sauces.
  • Oat milk lattes, as oat milk is much higher in carbs than almond milk or cream.
  • Whipped cream toppings, which are often sweetened.

How to customize an order

  1. Start with espresso or brewed coffee.
  2. Choose your milk carefully: heavy cream or a splash of whole milk is lowest in carbs per serving; unsweetened almond or coconut milk is next.
  3. Ask for fewer pumps of a sugar-free syrup, or skip syrup and add cinnamon or cocoa powder.
  4. Order a smaller size. A small latte has much less milk than a large one.
  5. Ask for “no classic syrup” or “unsweetened” for iced drinks, which are often sweetened by default.

Heavy cream is low in carbs per spoonful but high in calories and saturated fat, about 50 calories per tablespoon. A splash is fine; a large cup of cream-based coffee every day adds up. Our guide to coffee on keto explains more, and our article on butter coffee covers that trend.

Sugar-free syrups

Many cafés offer sugar-free syrups sweetened with sucralose or other sweeteners. They don’t add carbs, and approved sweeteners are considered safe within their acceptable daily intakes. But the World Health Organization advises against relying on sweeteners for weight control, and some people find sweet drinks keep sugar cravings going. Our tips on sugar cravings on keto can help.

Food at coffee shops

Most pastries, muffins, cookies and sandwiches are high in carbs. Better options include:

  • Egg bites or egg pots.
  • Boiled eggs.
  • Cheese and nut snack boxes.
  • Salads with chicken (skip the croutons and sweet dressings).
  • Plain nuts.

Caffeine

Café drinks can be strong. A large brewed coffee can contain a lot of caffeine, and extra shots add more. The European Food Safety Authority considers up to 400 mg of caffeine a day safe for healthy adults, and up to 200 mg a day in pregnancy. Too much can cause jitters, a racing heart and poor sleep, which can be more noticeable in the early weeks of keto.

Common questions

Is a latte keto?

A small latte made with regular milk has around 8 to 10 g of carbs, which can fit some keto plans but uses a lot of the allowance. A latte made with cream and water or unsweetened almond milk is lower.

Is bulletproof coffee available at cafés?

Some cafés offer butter or MCT coffee. Check what’s in it and remember it’s high in calories.

Can I drink coffee with milk on keto?

Yes, in small amounts. A splash of milk adds about 1 g of carbs.

Are sugar-free drinks okay on keto?

They don’t add carbs, but plain coffee or tea is the simplest choice.

Is cold brew keto?

Yes. Plain cold brew coffee has almost no carbs. Watch for sweetened cold foam and syrups, and add cream or unsweetened almond milk instead.

What’s the lowest-carb milk for coffee?

Heavy cream is lowest per serving because you only need a little, followed by unsweetened almond and coconut milk. Regular cow’s milk and oat milk are higher.

Safety note: Keto isn’t suitable for everyone. If you have diabetes, kidney or liver disease, take regular medication, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before cutting carbs this far (why it matters).
